Velocity Software, Inc. is recognized as
a leader in the performance measurement of z/VM and Linux on z.
The Velocity Performance Suite consist of a set of tools that
enable installations running z/VM to manage Linux and z/VM
performance.
In addition, many components of server farms can be
measured and analyzed. Performance data can be viewed real-time
through the use of either 3270
or a browser.
The CLOUD Implementation (zPRO) component is designed
for full cloud PaaS implementation as well as
to extend the capabilities of the z/VM sysprog (system programmer)
to the browser world. This feature moves system management to
the point-and-click crowd. Archived data and reports can be
kept available of long term review and reporting usine zMAP.
The zVPS, formally ESALPS, components consist of:
zMON (formally ESAMON - real-time display of performance data),
zTCP (formally ESATCP - SNMP data collection),
zMAP (formally ESAMAP - historical reporting and archiving),
zVWS (formally ESAWEB - z/VM based web server),
zTUNE (a subscription service),
zVIEW (formally SHOWCASE - web based viewing of performance data),
zPRO (new to the quality line of Velocity Software Products).
Velocity continues to work with other software vendors to ensure
smooth interface with or from other products such as
VM:Webgateway, CA-Webgateway, EnterpriseWeb, MXG, MICS.
Velocity software remains the leader and inovator in the
z/VM performance, Linux performance, Managing cloud computing
arenas.
IBM Z provides the security, resilience, performance,
scalability, agility, and sustainability that our business
requires. We use Velocity Software to track and report zTPF,
zOS , zVM and zLinux system capacity usage. We enabled our
team to easily see when our mainframes are running well
and conversely to visually see drops in demand signaling
potential issues in traffic outside of our systems. The
ease of use for the tool is especially important on a system
with limited VM staffing. (2024)
"Ensono uses zVPS and zPRO
to manage and monitor many of our z/VM internal
systems and client IBM Z environments.
This workload includes z/OS, VSE, and Linux running under z/VM.
Ensono uses all components of zVPS including zVIEW, zMAP, and zALERT for
dashboards, capacity reporting, and incident reporting respectively.

Manager - z/VM, z/VSE, and Linux on IBM Z
"zPRO allows us to gain time in provisioning Linux on z guests
add CPU and storage resources dynamically, even for people
who don't know the z/VM hypervisor. It allows our
coworkers from the x86 world to take actions like start, stop,
ebooting, move on another machine Linux guest in one click.
It is secured (we use LDAP authentication), light (need very few
resources), quick (work on a browser) and efficient."

Mainframe System Engineer, Global Financial Institution
"In a large Linux environment we provisioned new servers
using homegrown code. It was thousands of lines and
becoming more difficult to modify to address growing
audit regulations. In zPRO we found the ability to do the
things we needed with a collection of much smaller
EXECs, CGIs and DIRMODELs, and can do much more
plus we get the support of a vendor who has consistently
met our needs with the other products they provide."
Systems Engineer, Multinational Financial Services Company
"zPRO has spoiled me" from a Linux Admin that was given
access to build and manage application/DB servers himself
"zPRO lets me focus on bigger, time-consuming projects"
"After I gave zPRO access to our off-shore support teams,
I have not had 2AM phone calls asking for help since"
"We are using zPRO to make a case for [solutions] that
require data to be stored more securely instead of [in] the AWS cloud."
"After the second week of {bleeping} around with {W} and
still not getting it to work, we gave up. I had zPRO [running]
on four systems before lunch."
(This customer spent 4 months trying to get the other product
working and then it took 2 hours to clone a server with zPRO!!)
"We {seriously experienced VM people} tried OpenStack, CMA,
XCAT with absolutely NO success. zPRO just worked."
"I had a bunch of REXX scripts I used for DNS and hypersocket
assignments. zPRO let me plug them in and continue using
them without any changes"
"I had a real need to focus on bigger projects, not trivial stuff
like building new servers, or restarting them"
When I think of Velocity Software and their VM Tools,
I think "Commitment to Quality/Accuracy, Easy Access to
Experts, Reasonably Priced" ... What more could I ask for !!
Steve Amichetti, Satisfied Customer/User Since 1997 (October, 2008)
"zVPS is indispensable when you're doing Linux on z/VM.
The software itself is a great tool and the people
at Velocity are top notch! Velocity Software
is truely a customer-driven organization. "(October, 2008)

Our VM system crashed last night and again Tony bailed us out.
He quickly identified the problem and proceeded to fix our
environment. Velocity Software continues to exceed our
expectations in software capabilities, service and support. Your
organization is central to our success in the z/VM environment.
Thank you
Regards, Rob

Velocity Software enables the Office of the Executive Secretary at the
Supreme Court of Virginia to effectively manage and maintain its' zVM,
zLinux and zVSE platforms. Being able to have a comprehensive view of all
performance related data pays huge dividends in properly scaling the ever
growing application environment requirements on System z. (October, 2008)

What problems have you solved with zVPS?
Following are real production problems solved using zVPS
Installation lost DB2 connections every monday morning at 1am.
zVPS showed a process being started on all of their servers
concurrently at that time that caused DB2 connections to time out.
Installation saw spike in CPU, zVPS showed the kjournal
process becoming active across 100 servers. The cause was
diagnosed using zVPS to a DASD Cache Non-Volatile storage
becoming full because of backup operations
Installation received slow Websphere performance, zTUNE
diagnosed the LPAR was misconfigured and the installation
was sharing a CP with z/OS instead of having dedicated IFL.
Many installations have had page thrashing diagnosed as
due to system settings being incorrect.
Installations use the complete LInux RAM data to manage
virtual machine sizes to optimize overall storage utilization.
